چکیده

BACKGROUND Historically, prostheses involving cantilevered support have resulted in higher complication rates than have fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) without cantilevers. Through the judicious use of contemporary implant protocols, implant-supported cantilevered FDPs (ICFDPs) may provide a method of restoring edentate areas as predictably as do implant-supported FDPs without cantilevers. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED The authors searched the dental literature for clinical trials in which investigators appraised the survival rates of and complications (physiological and technical) associated with ICFDPs. RESULTS from workshops have suggested that at least five-year data are needed to enable evaluation of the effectiveness of implant therapy. The authors delineate these data in tables and include additional studies with shorter follow-up periods, as there is a paucity of five-year data addressing survival rates of short-span ICFDPs. Results. The data indicate that unilateral short-span cantilevered prostheses have an overall estimated survival rate at five years of 94.3 percent (95 percent confidence interval, 84.1-98.0 percent). These prostheses may be associated with minor technical problems--such as abutment or screw loosening, loss of retention and veneer chipping--that do not result in the failure of an ICFDP. CONCLUSIONS and CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS An ICFDP can be used in a manner that positions a pontic at a site with a dearth of bone or anatomical structures that preclude placement of a dental implant.

Relationship of Life Satisfaction and Satisfaction with Fixed Implant-Supported Prostheses in the Elderly

Background and Aim: The quality of dental treatment is one of the factors that affects life satisfaction in the elderly. Patients expect optimal function, esthetics, and speech from their prosthesis, while durability and technical considerations are also important for clinicians. In addition, social and psychological factors as well as costs can affect patient satisfaction. This study aimed to ...

Effect of Three Types of Temporary Luting Cements and Abutment Surface Sandblasting on Retentive Strength of Implant-Supported Fixed Prostheses

Background and Aim: Achieving appropriate retention and easy retrieva bility at the same time is challenging in implant-supported fixed par tial dentures (FPDs). Researchers have always been in search of a temporary cement to improve the retentive strength. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of three different temporary ce ments and sandblasting of the abutment surface on...

مطالعه تنش‌های اطراف ایمپلنت به روش اجزای محدود در بریج‌های با ساپورت دندان/ایمپلنت در شرایط اتصال سخت و غیرسخت در پروتزهای سمان شونده

Background and Aims: Freestanding fixed partial prosthesis is considered the first choice whenever possible. However, anatomical limitations for implants and other reasons may create situation in which it would be preferable to connect the implants to teeth. A biomechanical dilemma in a tooth/implant-supported system comes from dissimilar mobility. This disparity cause the bridge to function as...

Case Report: Implant-Supported Removable Partial Denture In A Mandibular Kennedy CL II: A Clinical Report

Abstract The implant-supported removable partial dentures should be an alternative to conventional removable partial dentures and implant-supported fixed partial prostheses when the implant’s insertion is confined by bone height and thickness. Placing a single implant in the posterior region would modify the Kennedy Class II configuration to a Kennedy Class III and increase the stability a...

Maxillary Implant-Supported Over-Denture, Role of Attachment Selection on Treatment Success Rate: A Literature Review

Objectives Maxillary implant-supported over-denture is a suitable treatment where conventional denture cannot be used. Few studies are available on maxillary over-denture while more are available on mandibular over-denture with no literature referring to attachment selection in maxillary over-dentures. The objective of this literature review was to see attachment selection strategies in maxill...
